Extranuclear Inheritance
Maternal effect - caused by maternal contributions to
the egg and effects on early development
- the genotype of the female parent determines the
phenotype of the offspring
- moth pigmentation - deposited in egg
- snail coiling - coil left or right
- bicoid - a maternal RNA placed in the egg
determines location of the head
Organelle heredity - some organelles have their own
haploid genomes, traits are typically passed from the mother
to all progeny
- typically, the phenotype of the female parent
determines the phenotype of the offspring
- Chloroplasts - a prokaryotic genome, carries out
photosynthesis
- Four O'Clocks- green, white or variegated
- Iojab - a nuclear gene changes the
chloroplasts, green, white and striped
- Chlamydonas - only one chloroplast
- Mitochondria - a prokaryotic genome, site of
electron transport, heteroplasmy
- poky, petite - neutral mutants have lost
mitochondria, suppressives produce defective
mitochondria
- Leber optic atrophy - G to A in NADH
dehydrogenase
