Recombination

  • three types of recombination (strand exchange)
    • homologous - requires extensive sequence homology (chromosomal recombination)
      • Holliday model
        • homologous pairing
        • nicks on two different strands exchange and ligation between different strands
        • branch migration
        • nick opposite strands and ligate
      • gene conversion - a non-reciprocal exchange
        • a consequence of branch migration and excision repair
    • site-specific - always occurs at the same location (viruses)
      • lambda phage integration
    • illegitimate - not site specific (transposons)
